should, expectations

She should all over me

As a follow up to last week’s post. She should all over me. She had tons of should up the wazoo and she dumped her should on me. And I had a choice. I could stand there and get should on. Take the should she was dishing out and probably land up shoulding all over someone else. Or I could step out of the way and live a clean and happy shouldless life. It is easier to move through life when you are not wading through a pile of should.

Expectations suck

Expectations suck

You should. You should buy that. You should know I need you. You should have promoted me. You should notice my new shoes. You should make me soup when I am sick.   I should be making more money by now. I should be married with children. I should go to that conference. I should clean the house. I should get up earlier. I should.   Expectations = frustration, anger. Expectations can lead us down the garden path. Separate wants from shoulds. Really, who owes you? Society, a corporation, your parents, your partner, your children, yourself? We all want. …

busy, overwhelm, paralysis, productive

Busyness & Overwhelm

We suffer busyness and overwhelm to the point of paralysis. We cannot do everything. Truth is, overwhelm stops us from doing anything. Try this. Do one thing. Focus on that one thing. Will you get it all done? Maybe. But you will get nothing done if you panic and sit on your hands. Or if you spend your energy fretting and worrying. ‘Maybe’ is better than ‘not a chance’. So give yourself a chance. Do one thing. Then pick another and do that. Once you do one thing, then another, you will be surprised how productive you can be. …

Knowledge vs. Intelligence vs. Wisdom

Knowledge vs. Intelligence vs. Wisdom

Knowledge vs. Intelligence vs. Wisdom According to the Oxford Dictionary… Knowledge is “facts, information, and skills acquired through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. The sum of what is known.” Intelligence is “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” Wisdom is “the quality of having an experience, knowledge and good judgment.” According to real life… Let’s imagine, you have a grandmother who loves to knit. Knowledge is knowing that she loves to knit. Knowledge is knowing… What colours she likes to knit. When she likes to knit. Where she likes to knit. For …

Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions

Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions

“Watch Your Thoughts, They Become Words; Watch Your Words, They Become Actions” Who said these words first is up for discussion with similar quotes being attributed to a variety of sources. No matter who said it first, this is valuable information that can be difficult to know deeply. Everything is created as a thought first, an idea, before it can become a physical reality. First, you think something up, then you believe you can do it, and then you do it and it becomes a reality. If you cannot think it up, or believe you can do it, you …

Sexism hurts everyone

Sexism

You cannot have sexism against one gender without sexism against another. Women as objects leaves men without permission to develop relationships of depth. Women as emotional (and that is weak/wrong) leaves men without a form of healthy emotional expression. Women as stay at home housekeepers and nannies means men must earn all the money and be less involved with their families. ‘Girls’ can’t work at the executive level means all of the strengths of women are removed from essential decisions and corporations suffer. Women must do women’s work means men cannot choose any job they want either. When one …

Leader or follower

Leader or follower

A follower is the woman at the front of the room saying exactly what her audience wants to hear. She is nothing more than a follower wearing a leader’s skirt. A leader is the woman at the front of the room saying exactly what needs to be said, whether her audience wants to hear it or not. She respects her audience. She values her audience. She says difficult things with intelligence, kindness, and generosity. A leader is the woman in the room who stands up and not knowing how she will be received, agrees with the leader at the …

Motivation is like exercise

I have heard it before. “Yeah, yeah, I go to these things and I get all pumped up but it only lasts a week. Then it is back to where I was and the inspiration is gone. It does not work. All they want is your money.” Motivation, like exercise, must be repeated to produce results. It does not matter what motivates you: dreaming, quotes, blog posts, talks, music, podcasts, the list goes on. What matters is, like exercise, you get a regular dose of it. Like exercise, you can pay a lot of money to get it: fancy …

No one right answer

Most of the time, there is no one right answer. There are an infinite number of answers, most are right. Trying to guess the right answer can paralyze us into inaction. Do I order coffee, a latte, tea or a cola? Do I focus on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram? Do I do cardio, lift weights or take a fitness class? Do I invest in stocks, real estate or a business? The answer is yes. All of the above. They are all are valid options. Start somewhere.   “If I must start somewhere, right here and now is the …

Should you leap?

Yes, you should leap. Most of the important things we do take a great leap of faith. Putting that new product into the marketplace. Sending our kids to summer camp for the first time. Asking for the sale. Every time we have something that important it feels like we are standing at the top of a gaping hole in the Earth and we cannot see the bottom. Because we cannot see the outcome. However, taking the leap is worth it because in that seemingly bottomless hole we might find love, truth, connection, health, wealth. We might not find anything, …
