Growing up to be a fire truck

When my eldest daughter was three years old, she decided to grow up to be a fire truck. No matter how many times someone tried to correct her based on their world view, she adamantly proclaimed she wanted to be a fire truck. She knew best what she wanted to become. She no longer wants to be a fire truck but she still knows best what she wants to become. The trick is to stop listening to the crowd and start listening to your heart. And then believe. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Reflection vs. Projection

One day, walking along pondering life and my problems, I came upon Giraffe. I told Giraffe my dilemma and she said I looked down on everyone. That might be true, I thought. Next, I came upon Hyena who told me that my problem was that I didn’t take anything seriously. That might be true, I thought. Walking on some more I met Ant, who told me that I was not significant enough. That might be true, I thought. Back at the watering hole, I peered down at myself, thinking of all these problems I had, and wondered why no one …

Why am I vegan? Part V

Our last in this series, I am answering a question I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on.   When I decided to become a plant-based eater my health changed for the better. I have more energy. I am leaner. I have healthier skin and hair. My nails grow long and strong. According to my doctor, I have a ‘shit-load’ of good cholesterol and I am healthier than most people half my age. All of the concerns …

This is part four of a five part series answering a question I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on. For about $20,000 each year in the United States, you could be a chicken sexer. You could squeeze little chicks until their intestines show from their butt, all to determine their sex for less than $10.00 per hour. Then either you can send them along the conveyer belt to become egg layers or you can shred them. …

Why am I vegan? Part III

Here we are in the middle of the series. I am answering a question that I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on. In January 2010, Scientific American published an article by Michael Moyer and Carina Storrs, ‘How Much is Left?’ to try to explain what planet Earth had left to give us. It is a difficult question, I admit. But it is a valid question. One worth trying to answer. According to that article, By choosing …

Why am I vegan? Part II

Starting last week and over the next few weeks, I will be answering a question that I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on. When humans hunted for game as part of their diet, before agriculture, we understood our connection to the animals we hunted. We prayed over them, held rituals, thanked the animals for their sacrifice and asked the Gods for forgiveness for taking an animal’s life. Different peoples had different rituals, but the fact that …

[ctt template=”4″ link=”JKg2z” via=”no” ]I have no moral standing on whether people should eat meat or eggs or drink milk. None at all. So why am I vegan?[/ctt] Humans have subsisted on animal products for almost as long as we have been upright. We …

Personal vs. Private

Social media encourages sharing. But sharing too much can get us into all sorts of trouble. But not sharing can make us come across as aloof. So how much is enough? And what is too much? If information is about you (and you only) and can help or support another person or group of people and you are willing to share in order to create change, then it is personal. You have opinions, ideas, and experiences that shared, can change the world. Go out and change the world. If information or an image or video is intended for you only …

Me too!

Thoughts on Me too… I know men and women who have been sexually assaulted. It happens in our homes, on the streets, in our schools and in our prisons, etc. Standing up for women who have been sexually assaulted is not a denial that men suffer. It is not a moment of exclusion. It is the roar of anguish of many who have been deeply wounded. I vote for a world where we put the politics aside, where we don’t argue about who is more of a victim, but work together to make the world better for everyone. Let’s put …
