Why am I vegan? Part II

Starting last week and over the next few weeks, I will be answering a question that I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on. When humans hunted for game as part of their diet, before agriculture, we understood our connection to the animals we hunted. We prayed over them, held rituals, thanked the animals for their sacrifice and asked the Gods for forgiveness for taking an animal’s life. Different peoples had different rituals, but the fact that …

Why am I vegan? Part I

Over the next few weeks, I will be answering a question that I am often asked, “Why are you vegan?”  I am not here to change anyone, but if you are curious as to why I make the choices I make, read on.   Eating animal products in and of itself, is neither bad nor good. [ctt template=”4″ link=”JKg2z” via=”no” ]I have no moral standing on whether people should eat meat or eggs or drink milk. None at all. So why am I vegan?[/ctt] Humans have subsisted on animal products for almost as long as we have been upright. We …

Personal vs. Private

Social media encourages sharing. But sharing too much can get us into all sorts of trouble. But not sharing can make us come across as aloof. So how much is enough? And what is too much? If information is about you (and you only) and can help or support another person or group of people and you are willing to share in order to create change, then it is personal. You have opinions, ideas, and experiences that shared, can change the world. Go out and change the world. If information or an image or video is intended for you only …

Me too!

Thoughts on Me too… I know men and women who have been sexually assaulted. It happens in our homes, on the streets, in our schools and in our prisons, etc. Standing up for women who have been sexually assaulted is not a denial that men suffer. It is not a moment of exclusion. It is the roar of anguish of many who have been deeply wounded. I vote for a world where we put the politics aside, where we don’t argue about who is more of a victim, but work together to make the world better for everyone. Let’s put …

David was already in the marble

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” – Michelangelo Michelangelo took inspiration for David from the biblical shepherd who downed Goliath with brains over brawn. But David the statue took the form that Michelangelo discovered as he chipped away. Every human is her own work of art. You have everything in you already. The answers are not in books or programs or other people. They may help, but they won’t sculpt the most beautiful you. Everything you need is inside you. Your job as artist is to …

Many shades of grey

Very little in life is really all or nothing, black or white. Turns out there are many shades of grey. Success is never black or white. Success is always grey, many shades of grey. Health is never black or white. Health lives on a continuum. You are with me or you are against me. Not really. We are too complex for that. I can partially agree with you, turns out. Death, now that might be black and white. Except I could find those would argue that death is yet one stage of the journey. Onward.

Are you brave enough?

When you were little, you followed your feelings. You fell in love with the frog you caught. Not the promise of the prince. You didn’t know that story yet. You fell in love with the frog. He was shiny green and had big beautiful eyes. You took him to your adult and told that adult how much you loved your new frog, kissing him on the head. “Eeewww! We don’t kiss frogs. They are dirty and have germs. We don’t love frogs. We love other people. You can only kiss a frog if he will turn into a prince. Put …

The myth of multitasking

You can’t multitask. Neither can I. You can continually interrupt yourself switching from one task to another quite quickly, but you cannot process two pieces of information at once or do two tasks simultaneously. The more related the tasks the harder it is to switch between the two tasks. If you are watching TV and drinking coffee, those tasks are quite different and so switching between the two is seamless. If the two tasks are related, such as talking on the phone and writing an unrelated report, the switch is more difficult. The same goes for the complexity of the …

It’s not Personal

Some guy cuts you off in traffic and can’t even be bothered to even give you the finger as he speeds off. What’s his story? He is a jerk who doesn’t care about anyone but himself. His youngest daughter is dying after being struck by a car. He at least wants to say ‘I love you’ one more time. He desperately needs those concert tickets because he suffers from the Fear of Missing Out. He is late for that job interview because he had to feed his mother, suffering dementia, before he left the house and the oatmeal spilled and …

Productive vs. Busy

We all seem so busy. Can’t hang out. I’m busy. Didn’t get the project done. Too busy. Productive comes from the verb produce. Busy has no equivalent. It is a noun, no action necessary. To produce means to generate, create, cause, show. All so much more interesting than being busy. No more getting busy.  Produce. Generate ideas that can make a difference in the world. Create something amazing. Cause a ruckus. Show the world. Repeat. We are waiting in anticipation.
