#LoveStories celebrates the good people who make a difference. Tell a story about someone who has made your life a little lighter. Better yet, share that story with them.
Service jobs. People people. Special people who provide service to others: wait staff, retail clerks, bartenders, baristas, taxi drivers, tour guides. They smile despite the day they are having. They feed us when we are hungry, get us where we need to go, and help us pick out the right shirt for the occasion. Take away service people and the world would be an empty place; they are everywhere but often unnoticed.
Tell us a story of when you received exceptional service, where you felt like you were family.
Share your story on our Facebook Group. #sharethelove
The Taxi Dad
One evening when I was young, I took off for the night with some friends. We started at one club and went down the road to club after club, dancing our way across town. We had so much fun that we were not paying attention to where we were. Friends tired and slowly went home until there was only two of us left.
Not only did we lose track of where we were, we lost track of each other. I found myself in a strange part of town by myself in the middle of the night. I had spent almost all my money as well. Not knowing what to do, I flagged a taxi and climbed in.
“Where to?”
“Well, I’m going to Birchmount, but I only have $10.00. Please take me as far as you can, and I’ll walk from there.”
“Birchmount? You are far from home. How did you get out here?”
“Um, I was with friends, but I lost track of them. How far do you think $10.00 will get me?”
“Not far,” he said as he turned off the meter. “I’ll take you home. You shouldn’t be out here so late all by yourself.”
“Really? But…”
“No buts. I will take you home.”
We talked on the way home. He spoke to me like a dad, not a stranger. He had kids of his own and well, kids do dumb things. He would hope someone would help his dumb kid if she needed help.
He took me right to the door of my home. I gave him the measly $10.00 I had left over from a night of fun. I thanked him profusely.
He just smiled and told me to be safe. Lesson learned. Sometimes your guardian angel is driving a cab.
