Habits are neutral

Habits are neutral. A habit is nothing more than a repeated behaviour learned deep enough that we expend minimal energy (physical and mental energy) to perform that behaviour.

Crossing the street. Yelling at our kid for slamming the door. Talking rather than listening. Saving and investing our money.

Habits allow us to conserve energy or put our energy into new activities, unfamiliar activities, and still cross the street safely and build our investment portfolios.

You can allow old habits, old patterns to rule you. Or you can rule them. You have the power to build the habits you want, and change the habits that no longer serve you.

Charles Duhigg has written a well-researched and fascinating book on the power of habit.
